Press Release:
The Southwest Minnesota Orchestra will perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 in D Major (“Titan”) along with the world premiere of Dr. Peter Lothringer’s “Painting by Numbers III” on Sunday afternoon, Nov. 20, 5 PM, at the Church of the Holy Redeemer, Marshall, MN. The concert is given as part of the worldwide festivities surrounding the commemoration of the 100th anniversary of Mahler’s death in 1911 in Vienna. Also featured will be Te-Chiang Liu, the new SMO Concertmaster, who hails from Boston and Taiwan. Tickets are $10 for Adults and $5 for students; tickets will be available at the door. For more information, please call the SMSU Fine Arts Dept. at 507.537.7103.
Dr. Rieppel states: “The Mahler symphony is definitely the largest work SMO has ever taken on! It’s a piece of huge proportions and has the kind of emotional punch of Mozart’s Requiem, which we performed to a sold-out audience exactly 5 years ago. It was also the last time we performed at Holy Redeemer Church, which has always had excellent acoustics— but now it’s also a feast for the eyes. Their recent renovations of the narthex and the sanctuary are nothing short of spectacular. It will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for Marshall and I know people will enjoy it!”
